da Vinci Surgery Pyeloplasty
da Vinci surgery pyeloplasty is needed when the connection between the kidney and the ureter either deforms or disconnects. This area where the damage or disconnection occurs is called the ureter-pelvic junction also called a UPJ. The UPJ can be deformed, disconnected or obstructed for a number of reasons and the urology specialist performs a pyeloplasty to reconstruct the UPJ and fix whatever the problem is.
da Vinci surgery pyeloplasty is also performed on infants since it can be a congenital problem. For adults there are different parts of the urinary system that can cause damage to the UPJ. The urinary tract starts out at the kidneys and then sends the freshly made urine down the ureter the ureter is a very thin passage that empties into the bladder and when the bladder becomes full we urinate by passing urine through the urethra. In men the urethra is also surrounded by the prostate. One way that the ureteral-pelvic junction no longer works properly is by urine not being able to leave the urinary system and backing up the ureter and deforming the renal pelvis by expanding it. As the deformation progresses the ureter and kidney can deform and/or detach. If not taken care of over time the kidney function can decrease until the kidney no longer works properly.
Through CT and MRI imaging the extent of the damage to the renal pelvis and ureter can be seen. Whether the cause of the damage comes from urinary retention, kidney stones, inflammation of the ureter or a dilated blood vessel blocking the ureter, the standard of care in an adult is the surgical repair of the UPJ. This means open pyeloplasty, laparoscopic pyeloplasty, or robotic pyeloplasty should be performed in the majority of UPJ obstruction cases.
da Vinci surgery pyeloplasty is the preferred solution granted an experienced robotic surgeon is available. Otherwise a laparoscopic pyeloplasty by a laparoscopic surgeon would generally be the next solution to use.
Da Vinci surgery has changed the landscape of cancer surgery for the urologist and patient alike with minimally invasive procedures and all of the benefits derived from the best visualization of the surgical site, the ability to make smooth micro movements creating fewer traumas and bleeding, no longer creating large scars or surface sutures minimizing the risk of infection, and getting out of the hospital faster for a more comfortable recovery.
