da Vinci Surgery Prostatectomy

da Vinci surgeryda Vinci surgery prostatectomy gives the patients the opportunity not have a large scar on their stomachs after their surgery. This robotic prostate cancer surgery system also gives our surgeons several tools to manipulate through the radical prostatectomy without damaging the nerves that affect the ability to urinate. Men will have a tendency to use the da Vinci surgery prostatectomy because the high definition 3D depth perception makes the surgical movements clearly seen during the subtle manipulation of the nerve bundles just along the prostate, which can cause erectile dysfunction if damaged.

da Vinci surgery prostatectomy preparation is similar to most surgical preparations. Initially Dr. Bianco will define the stage of prostate cancer through the results of the prostate biopsy, x-rays, MRI, and or CT scans. Preparation may include clearance for your da Vinci surgery with your primary physician and any specialty doctors that you may have such as a cardiologist. Once you set your appointment for the da Vinci surgery prostatectomy you will be given some pre and post-surgery instructions that Dr. Bianco will go over with you. These instructions may include no eating or drinking the evening before the surgery and not taking any blood thinners such as 81 mgs. of aspirin a week to ten days before the surgery. Every set of pre and post-surgery instructions are specific to each patient.

Dr. Bianco’s da Vinci surgery prostatectomy starts out by having the anesthesia team put an IV line in the arm to give you medication such as antibiotics and several medicines to both sleep and feel no pain during the procedure. Once in the operating room your abdomen will be cleaned with a surgical preparation solution (often iodine). Dr. Bianco will then measure and mark the spots for the camera and laparoscopic instruments to be placed through the abdomen. Tiny incisions will be made, the camera and instruments at the end of the thin rods will be placed into the body and some CO2 is pumped into the body opening up the surgical site for a clear vision and room for the camera and instruments to move around. The telescoping rods are then attached to the da Vinci surgical system.

da Vinci surgery prostatectomy then starts in earnest as Dr. Bianco carefully cuts through the layers of tissue exposing the prostate, urethra, bladder, lymph nodes and nerve bundles. During the surgery he will disconnect the urethra, detach the prostate, remove some lymph nodes if needed, reconnect the two ends of the urethra while placing a catheter into the bladder He will have the pathologist look at the prostate and lymph nodes that were removed to be sure the cancer was removed completely and once this is confirmed the surgical site will be closed. After you wake up from the surgery you will be taken care of by the medical staff and Dr. Bianco. He will explain how the surgery went and see to it that any medication that you may need such as pain medications and antibiotics are ordered. According to your prior health and the degree of your robotic radical prostatectomy plans will be made to go home for the rest of your recovery.
